Rebuilding the customer journey, from the website to the inbox and beyond

Website · UX · WordPress · Brand · Klaviyo · Email · SMS · Push · Loyalty

The snapshot

Brooklyn Donuts had a lot happening across the business, but the pieces weren’t always working together.

The website was dated and difficult to manage. The CRM was largely campaign-led, while loyalty, app ordering and customer data sat within the Shift8 ecosystem. There was an opportunity to connect the website, loyalty and marketing channels into a more considered customer experience.

The project started with a website rebuild in March 2026. By August, the new site was live and Klaviyo had replaced Mailchimp as the foundation for email, SMS and push. From there, the work has continued across loyalty, lifecycle marketing, brand and packaging.

The starting point

The old Brooklyn Donuts website wasn’t doing the brand any favours.

The design was dated, the UX was lacking and it even had a hamburger menu on desktop. It felt like a mobile design that had simply been stretched onto a larger screen. The client hated it too.

There was also a practical problem. The site wasn’t built in a visual editor, so the Brooklyn team couldn’t easily make updates themselves. Even straightforward changes could require a developer.

So the rebuild needed to do more than look better. It needed to make the customer experience better and make the site easier for the business to manage.
At the same time, Brooklyn had a loyalty programme, app ordering, customer data and an existing email database, but the CRM wasn’t yet being used as a broader lifecycle marketing tool.

The opportunity wasn’t simply to build a better website or send better emails. It was to start connecting the different parts of the customer experience.

Rebuilding the website

The new website brought together a cleaner visual direction with a more considered UX and content structure, while making the site much easier for the Brooklyn team to manage.

The rebuild covered UX strategy, information architecture, wireframes, visual design, WordPress design and build, and project management.
Rather than simply replacing the existing pages, the website was considered around what customers needed to find and what the business needed to manage day to day.

That meant giving some of the parts of the business that were previously difficult to manage a proper place on the site. Loyalty and coffee became more prominent parts of the customer experience, while menu, catering and locations were rebuilt around making it easier for customers to find what they need.

Behind the scenes, the site was also connected more closely to the systems Brooklyn already uses. The menu can be updated without rebuilding the page, catering pulls through from Shift8, the store locator connects with Google, the Instagram feed updates automatically and the franchise form connects with the existing franchise platform.

The result is a website that isn’t just a better front-end experience. It takes some of the ongoing manual work out of managing the business online, too.

The aim was simple: make the site work harder without making it harder for the client to manage.

Refining the brand

The website was part of a broader shift in how Brooklyn Donuts was presenting the brand.
This wasn’t a rebrand. The core typography and colour palette stayed, but the visual direction was refined to feel more considered and premium.
That meant moving away from elements that no longer felt right for the business, including “Born in Brooklyn”, which felt too American for an Australian brand, and taking a closer look at photography, layout and overall visual presentation.
That same thinking is now being applied to the packaging, with the range being redesigned to give the brand a more polished and cohesive presence across the products customers see in store.

From campaign emails to customer lifecycle

The CRM work initially started in Mailchimp, but it became clear that Brooklyn needed more flexibility than a campaign-led approach could provide.
For a food business, regular email sends simply to fill a calendar weren’t the answer. The opportunity was to use customer behaviour, loyalty and timing to make communication more relevant.

So the CRM strategy moved towards automation-first, Push/SMS-led and campaign-light, with the focus on repeat purchase, loyalty retention and customer value.
Campaigns still have a role, but they need to have a reason to exist. A new product, a useful offer, a competition or something customers will actually want to act on.
The automated customer journey can then do more of the ongoing work.

Moving to Klaviyo

In August, Brooklyn moved from Mailchimp to Klaviyo, opening up email, SMS and push within the same CRM environment.
A significant part of the work was making sure the Shift8 data and customer behaviour could support the strategy, rather than simply moving the existing database to a new platform.

The CRM was mapped around the customer lifecycle, from joining and activating through to repeat purchase, loyalty and reactivation.
Each channel also has a different role.

Push is suited to immediate, contextual communication.
SMS is reserved for moments where there’s a clear reason to act.
Email provides more space for launches, education, discovery and storytelling.

The result is a system designed around what is happening with the customer, rather than simply what needs to be sent that week.

Putting the strategy to work

The first lifecycle flows went live in the final week of September. (2026)
One of the first was Reward Earned, which responds when a customer earns a loyalty reward rather than relying on the next scheduled campaign.

In roughly one week, the flow generated measurable store visits and revenue, with an 8.1% store-visit rate from flow messages.

The communication isn’t happening because it’s Tuesday and Brooklyn needs to send an email. It’s happening because something happened in the customer’s relationship with the brand.

Giving customers a reason to engage

Growing the database wasn’t about asking people to sign up for another marketing channel. There needed to be a reason to want to be part of it.
International Coffee Day provided a simple example. Customers could sign up to the Brooklyn SMS club for the chance to receive a free coffee, turning a promotional moment into an opportunity to grow the database.

The campaign drove a significant increase in SMS sign-ups over the campaign period and generated a 10.15% click rate, showing what can happen when the offer, message and action are all clear.

It became a useful part of the broader growth strategy: give customers a reason to engage, then build on that relationship beyond the initial interaction.

Connecting the customer experience

The Brooklyn Donuts website, loyalty programme, Shift8 and Klaviyo aren’t being treated as separate projects.

The website makes it easier for customers to find, explore and interact with the brand. The CRM can then use customer behaviour to make communication more relevant, while the brand continues to develop consistently across digital and physical touchpoints.

Together, these pieces create a more connected omnichannel customer experience, with each part supporting the next.
The website and CRM are different pieces of the project, but they are working towards the same thing: a better customer experience that also works for the business behind it.

What changed

The new website launched in August 2026.

Between 1 August and 4 October, it recorded 38,392 sessions, up 445% against the previous period, with organic search accounting for 24,916 sessions, up 487%. The rebuilt Menu page received 9,910 views, while the new Text Club page received 5,400. Locations received 3,400 views and Web Ordering 3,100.
The CRM is showing early signs of the same shift.

September was the first month with email, SMS and push available in Klaviyo alongside live lifecycle flows. Email click rate increased from 0.45% to 2.52%, while the SMS database grew by 141%.

The first live flows also began generating measurable store visits and revenue within their first week, giving the new lifecycle strategy an early commercial signal.
The work is still developing, so these are early results rather than a finished picture.

Push, for example, is technically working but only 23 devices currently have it enabled. Growing that audience is one of the next pieces of work.

The bigger picture

Brooklyn Donuts didn’t need another website sitting on its own, or another email marketing calendar sitting beside it.

The opportunity was to make the different parts of the customer experience work together.

The website is easier to use and easier for the team to manage. The CRM is moving from regular broadcast communication towards lifecycle marketing. Loyalty and customer data are becoming more useful, and the brand is continuing to develop across the digital and physical experience.

It’s an ongoing project, but the direction is clear: Build the foundations, connect the pieces and make each customer interaction work a little harder.

LIST GROWTH

Where things were

Couture Kingdom designs officially licensed pop-culture jewellery, with ranges from Disney, Hello Kitty and Friends, Care Bears, Peanuts and Marvel.

The team was running its own email marketing in Klaviyo. The account was set up and sending, but they needed someone who knew what to do with it to grow.

What needed doing

There were basic flows in place, set up without a strategy and without much consideration of the brand or customer behaviour. Deliverability also needed work.

The plan was the same each month: improve deliverability, increase the number of engaged subscribers, grow the list, send weekly campaigns that generate revenue, and build automations that generate revenue in the background. For the first few months, deliverability was the main focus.

The flows

The existing flows were replaced with a series planned around a strategy: welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, first purchase, post-purchase with product education, and wishlist flows.

The wishlist flows include alerts, such as a low stock reminder when an item on a customer’s wishlist is running out. A Win Your Wishlist campaign was run alongside them to get more people moving through the flows and engaging with the emails.

Using launches to grow the list

Part of the work was helping Couture Kingdom make its launches more successful.

The business did not have a loyalty program and was not sold on implementing one. So email and SMS were used in its place. Subscribers who join the waitlist get early access to new releases.

The coming soon campaigns were built to create hype and a sense of exclusivity before each release. One teaser email showed three embossed cards: “Three cards. Three clues. One new face. Two iconic returns.” Tapping a card led to a landing page of hints, such as blurred images of the coming soon pieces and cartoon graphics of the characters from the new range. From there, people could join the waitlist.

A bit of guessing is half the fun.

The launches were also promoted on social, using automated DMs and comment replies to get people into the funnel and grow the list. List growth was up 15%.

What changed

Two years on, the work runs to a monthly rhythm: protect deliverability, grow the list, increase the number of engaged subscribers, send weekly campaigns that generate revenue and keep refining the flows.

The deliverability score now sits at 96, up 61 points, which means the emails are reaching the people they are sent to. Those people are opening and clicking: open rate is 42.2%, up 23.93%, and click-through rate is 5.44%, up 59%.

Email-attributed revenue rose 27%, and overall revenue for the business was up 14%.

Couture Kingdom now has an email program that works between launches as well as during them, and a way to reward its most engaged customers that did not need a new platform.

simplestyleco.com.au

Simple Style Co already had email marketing in place, but it wasn’t reflecting the brand they’d worked so hard to build.

The emails relied heavily on promotions and discount messaging. While that might drive short-term sales, it wasn’t communicating what actually makes the brand different. Their extensive product range, thoughtful design and quality were getting lost behind constant offers.

The goal wasn’t simply to redesign a few templates. It was to rethink how email could better support the customer journey, strengthen the brand and generate more revenue through smarter automation.

Over six months, the results spoke for themselves.

+139.54%

WELCOME SERIES REVENUE

+146.95%

WELCOME SERIES CONVERSIONS

+306.77%

BROWSE ABANDON SERIES REVENUE

+144.2%

OVERALL AUTOMATION CONVERSION INCREASE

The Opportunity – Email marketing & Automation Strategy

The existing automations covered the basics, including Welcome, Abandoned Cart and Post Purchase, but they were built around generic ecommerce best practice rather than how Simple Style Co’s customers actually shop.

The templates felt disconnected from the website, the messaging focused on discounts instead of value, and there were several missed opportunities to keep customers engaged beyond their first purchase.

Rather than making small improvements, we rebuilt the email programme from the ground up.

A Strategy Before Design

Every automation was mapped around customer behaviour, not arbitrary time delays.

Instead of relying on promotional messaging, each flow was designed to educate, build confidence and help customers discover more of the range naturally.

The creative direction followed the same thinking. Clean layouts, premium product photography and considered typography created a seamless experience between the website and inbox, making every email feel like an extension of the brand.

Email Marketing Strategy: Rebuilding the Customer Journey

The Welcome Series shifted from leading with a discount to introducing the brand, showcasing the product range and building trust from the very first interaction. That single change resulted in a 139.54% increase in revenue and 146.95% more conversions.

Browse Abandonment became more than a reminder email. Customers received relevant product recommendations, supporting information and carefully timed follow-up that answered questions rather than applying pressure. Revenue from this flow increased by 306.77%.

The Post Purchase journey evolved into an experience that extended beyond order confirmation, helping customers get more from their purchase while naturally introducing complementary products and encouraging repeat business.

We also introduced entirely new automations, including Wishlist alerts, Review requests and a Winback sequence, giving the brand new revenue opportunities that simply didn’t exist before.

A Shift in Brand Voice

Perhaps the biggest transformation wasn’t visual, it was how the brand communicated.
Every email was rewritten to sound like the people behind Simple Style Co. Helpful, knowledgeable and approachable.

The messaging moved away from constant urgency and instead focused on building confidence in the products, educating customers and reinforcing the quality of the brand.
The result was a customer experience that felt more considered, more premium and ultimately performed better.

The Outcome

Revenue and conversion improvements were the obvious wins, but the biggest success was creating an email programme that finally reflected the brand customers experienced everywhere else.

Instead of relying on discounts to drive sales, email became a channel that strengthened the brand, improved customer experience and generated consistent revenue through thoughtful strategy and automation.

jessicaella.com.au

Jessica Ella is a women’s healing expert and educator running a growing suite of evergreen digital programs through her platform Aaruka. My role was to implement a multichannel funnel strategy, starting with lead magnets as an entry point. There were no lead magnets, no segmentation, and no real strategy. There was just one welcome flow doing the heavy lifting, but not converting. So the brief was clear: build something that could actually grow with her.

97%

INCREASE IN TOTAL CONVERSIONS (2 MONTHS)

183%

GROWTH IN EMAIL-ATTRIBUTED CONVERSIONS

18-25%

LEAD MAGNET FLOW CONVERSION RATE

10

KLAVIYO FLOWS BUILT & LIVE

The Brief

Jessica had the programs, the audience, and the expertise. What she didn’t have was the infrastructure to turn interest into enrolments at scale. Because one Kajabi sequence can only do so much, there was no way to segment by interest. There was no lead capture system feeding the funnel, and no visibility into how people were moving — or not moving — through her programs.
She needed a full rebuild. Strategy first, then the tech to back it up.

What I Did

Strategy & Customer Journey

I started by mapping the entire customer journey from cold traffic through to repeat purchase. This covered paid ads, lead magnets, landing pages, email nurture, and course delivery. Rather than plugging holes, I built the whole thing from the ground up. That meant funnel structures for different audience segments, lead magnet concepts designed to attract and qualify the right people, and a clear picture of what needed to happen at each stage to move someone from curious to enrolled.

Conversion Copywriting

I wrote all of the landing page copy, lead magnet pages, sales pages, course enrolment pages, and thank you pages. The approach was direct-response with a human voice: hooks that earn the scroll, and messaging that balances emotional resonance with a clear reason to act. Because consistency matters across a funnel, every page was written to feel like Jessica, not like a template.

Landing Page Design, Build & Funnel Structure

I designed and built each landing page in Kajabi from the ground up. This included page hierarchy, content flow, conversion pathways, and wireframe direction. Each lead magnet landing page has its own distinct visual styling, so every entry point into the funnel feels considered and on-brand for that specific program, rather than a copy-paste template. Because reducing friction at every step matters as much as the copy itself, each page has a clear job: capture, nurture, or convert.

Funnel Flow & Conversion Pathways

As a result, the funnel connects logically at every stage. There are no dead ends and no leaky handoffs between lead capture and purchase. Each page earns the next click — and hands the customer smoothly into the email nurture sequence that follows.

Klaviyo Setup & Email Marketing Automation

I migrated everything from Kajabi’s native email into Klaviyo and built it properly from scratch. This included warming the account and sending reputation before going live, so deliverability wasn’t sacrificed for speed. From there, I built 10 flows covering the full customer lifecycle:

Welcome sequences

Lead magnet nurture flows (converting at 18–25%)

Course onboarding emails

Engagement and re-engagement flows

Behaviour-triggered automations based on course progress and purchase activity

I built audience segmentation around behaviour, engagement level, and which programs people had — and hadn’t — touched.

Kajabi Integration & Zapier Architecture

To connect the marketing and the learning platform, I integrated Kajabi with Klaviyo and designed custom Zapier workflows to handle what the native integration couldn’t. As a result, course enrolments, lesson progression, and purchase behaviour all fed back into Klaviyo in real time. This meant Jessica’s audience was always in the right segment, receiving the right message, based on what they’d actually done.

The Outcome

In the two months from go-live, total conversions nearly doubled — up 97% on the previous period. Because the flows were built around real behaviour rather than a linear sequence, attributed email conversions lifted 183%. What had been a single static sequence became a connected, self-running system. Leads now come in through multiple entry points, get nurtured by content relevant to their specific interests, and convert into course enrolments without Jessica having to manually intervene.

The infrastructure is evergreen. It grows as Jess does.

lyndicohen.com

The Nude Nutritionist, founded by dietitian Lyndi Cohen, helps people build a healthy, realistic relationship with food through online programs and digital tools like the Binge Free Academy and Back to Basics app. With multiple product offerings, each with its own customer journey, their email setup had become overcrowded and inconsistent. I helped bring it all together with a smarter email marketing strategy in Australia, streamlining automations, tightening flows, and creating a more connected experience.

The Challenge

Over time, new automations had been added on top of old ones, creating a web of overlapping flows and too many touch points hitting the same inbox. Subscribers were getting repetitive or mistimed messages, and the structure made it hard to track what was actually working.

The goal was to simplify the entire ecosystem, personalise communication across different customer segments, and ensure every email had a clear purpose.

+240%

65%

AVG OPEN RATE

1.3 HOURS

TIME TO CONVERT

33%

COMPLETION RATE

Content Strategy: Reduced inbox fatigue with smarter, value-driven weekly campaign.

The Approach: Building an Email Marketing Strategy in Australia

I started by restructuring the flow architecture from the ground up. This meant auditing every existing automation, removing unnecessary steps, and connecting flows so they worked together, not against each other.

The new setup focused on personalisation and segmentation, tailoring the journey for each customer based on their interaction with programs like Binge Free Academy and Back to Basics.

Weekly campaigns also got a full refresh. Instead of sending constant promotions, we built a strategic content plan that balanced education, storytelling, and timely product highlights. Each email added value and relevance, helping nurture subscribers in a way that felt more human, not salesy.

The Outcome

By simplifying automation and tightening campaign strategy, we transformed email marketing into a consistent, connected experience that aligns with Lyndi’s brand, supportive, down-to-earth, and focused on long-term change.

Now, each message meets people where they’re at, guiding them toward the right program or resource without overwhelming their inbox. The system is smarter, lighter, and built to grow with the brand.

The Brief
Run with Turia is a live 10-week online running program created by Turia Pitt. In past launches, the cart was closed for long stretches during the promotional period causing interest to drop off. For the Feb 2025 round, the goal was to simplify the enrolment process, generate new leads, grow the email list, and drive sales steadily over the three-month campaign.

My Role
I led the full campaign strategy, from emails, landing pages and lead magnets to content planning, social support, and list-building funnels. I worked closely with the paid media manager to keep everything aligned and flowing, from first ad click to final enrolment.

One of the biggest shifts was removing friction. Instead of hiding the cart behind waitlists or limited windows, we opened it from day one—so people could sign up the moment they were ready. This kept the momentum going and led to stronger overall conversions.

We also focused on what happened after someone signed up. I built out a post-purchase experience with exclusive content, prep material and motivational emails designed to keep participants engaged, excited, and connected right up until day one of the program.

The Results
We shifted away from the traditional gated-cart model and instead kept enrolments open throughout the campaign. This change alone helped reduce friction and capture sales at every stage—especially for impulse-driven signups.

Lead magnets played a big role in building the list, with the Beginner’s Guide converting cold leads for under $1 each. Paid traffic was backed by a solid email funnel and segmentation strategy in Klaviyo, which helped nurture those leads through to conversion.

We also built out the full post-purchase experience, keeping participants engaged between sign-up and program start with prep content, motivational emails, and clear next steps.

To boost revenue further, I introduced checkout upsells and down sells, adding extra value without needing more ad spend.

NO TECH GREMLINS ON LAUNCH DURING PEAK TRAFFIC

The Brief – Shopify Website Design

Fearless Swimwear is Lyndi Cohen’s (The Nude Nutritionist) inclusive swimwear brand designed to help women feel confident in and out of the water. The hero one-piece actually fits real bodies, with flexible sizing that works for different top and bottom combinations.

The Fearless team needed a website and email marketing strategy that reflected their ethos — real women, real bodies, and swimwear that genuinely fits. The goal was to create an online experience that made every shopper feel supported, seen, and excited to buy.

They also wanted a Shopify website design that made purchasing effortless, no confusing size charts or multiple product listings, and a launch plan that could handle high traffic without a glitch.

What We Did

Website: built for inclusivity and ease

Magic Sizing for a hero one-piece
Most brands overlook that women aren’t always the same size on top and bottom. We built a custom product logic so shoppers can choose a top size and instantly see the matching bottoms. Behind the scenes, it’s multiple SKUs; on the front end, it’s one seamless experience with a smart, body-aware fit selector.

Size-specific model gallery
Representation mattered. We created a gallery that lets customers see each swimsuit on models with similar body types and coverage preferences. They can toggle between looks to find the version that feels most like them, a feature that turns shopping into self-confidence.

Theme-level cart add-ons
Instead of relying on upsell apps, we built a lightweight system directly into the theme using metafields. The Fearless team can now link complementary products to any item in-store, no extra code, no added cost, just a clean UX.

Email Marketing Strategy: Personal from the Start

From day one, personalisation drove the plan. We launched with a quiz that asked customers about size, fit, and coverage preferences. Those answers synced directly into Klaviyo as custom properties, powering fully personalised emails — from welcome to nurture to abandoned cart. A size-12 customer, for example, only sees products and models that match her size.

For launch week, we used a waitlist-only pre-order model. Subscribers received a password at 7 p.m. sharp, giving them early access before the public. This mix of exclusivity, personalisation, and timing created genuine excitement and connection, not just a sale.

The Outcome

The project delivered more than just numbers, it built a foundation for scalable growth. The new Shopify website and email marketing strategy give Fearless a system that feels as thoughtful as the brand itself. Every customer interaction, from browsing to inbox, now feels intentional, inclusive, and uniquely Fearless.

A landing page designed to support the launch of Turia Pitt’s new book Selfish—with two goals in mind: drive pre-orders and grow her email list through a free downloadable guide.

I handled both the UX and responsive design across desktop and mobile, making sure the page flowed well, felt on-brand, and made it easy to take action.

On top of that, I mapped out the email marketing strategy to support the launch—so we weren’t just promoting the book, we were building the funnel behind it too.

Brand Overview

ANAE Collection is an Australian women’s fashion label made for the bold, modern woman. Each piece balances confidence and rebellion with everyday luxury. The brand is unapologetic, refined, and always ready to stand out.

Project Scope

Ecommerce Website Design (Shopify)

I built ANAE’s ecommerce website from the ground up to reflect its strong, feminine, and confident identity. The goal was to create a site that feels as bold as the clothes themselves.

The design pairs minimal layouts with expressive imagery and smooth navigation. Every element works together to deliver a seamless shopping experience, from first click to checkout. As a result, ANAE now has an online presence that looks polished and performs beautifully.

Email Marketing Strategy & Automation

Alongside the website design, I created ANAE’s email marketing system that connects design with data to build long-term growth.

The goal was simple: turn subscribers into loyal customers through smart segmentation, personalisation, and consistent list growth.
To make it happen, I built a series of automated flows that guide customers through every stage of their journey.

Flows included:

A warm, on-brand Welcome Series

Abandoned Cart reminders that encourage customers to complete their order

Post-Purchase messages that nurture loyalty and spark repeat sales

Re-engagement flows that reconnect with customers who’ve gone quiet

Each flow was designed to feel personal rather than pushy. In turn, ANAE built stronger relationships with its audience and a foundation for continued growth.

Client: Matchbox Australia
Scope: Email Marketing – Automated Customer Journey Flows

This project involved the development of several automated email flow sequences for Matchbox Australia, designed to enhance and personalise the customer experience while fostering long-term loyalty.

The customer journey flows included:

Abandoned Cart: Re-engaging customers who left items in their cart.

Welcome Series: Introducing new customers to the Matchbox brand and offerings.

Win-Back Lapsed Customers: Encouraging re-engagement from customers who haven’t interacted in a while.

Browser Abandonment: Targeting customers who browsed without making a purchase.

Transactional/Post Purchase: Confirming purchases and encouraging further engagement.

Loyalty Program Sequence: Rewarding and nurturing loyal customers.

Each sequence was crafted to boost customer retention and personalise the interaction between Matchbox and its customers. The emails were designed to be consistent with Matchbox’s branding and optimised for a seamless experience across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
